Alcohol Took My Twenties, My Phone My Thirties
I am struggling to keep up with all of my responsibilities. I have trouble prioritizing things because my husband and I disagree on what’s most important, and there’s a price I’ll pay if I want to do things my way and not his, so he often wins because I am just exhausted with standing up for myself constantly. The kids should be first, always. He’s okay with the kids just being generally safe, but will let them cry and go unattended. It bugs me because he claims to be “watching” them, when he’s not physically present or he’s glued to his phone. He wanted me to stay in bed this morning since I was up late doing homework, but Finn was crying and he wasn’t comforting him, so I got up. School is important, I’m almost finished, but I find it hard to focus, especially if the kids are home because I know he’s not giving them the attention that they need and I hate that he always puts them near a screen. My phone definitely eats at my productivity, too. I get sucked in, even though I turned notifications off, I will check text messages or emails I get from Finn’s school, then I end up scrolling. I delete social media constantly then have to reinstall it to answer a message or join a group for school. It feels inescapable. I try to bring books or the New Yorker to appointments with me so I don’t look at my phone. I really like listening to music and podcasts and I wish there was a way to access those without needing a phone connected to the rest of the internet. I’m an addict, so it’s unusually hard for me to break up with bad habits. I think about it a lot and I think it’s interfered with my life even to the extent of drugs and alcohol. It steals my time. I feel so much better at the end of the day when I’ve done real work. I do like taking photos and video editing and such, but I stopped doing it regularly because it feels like a waste. I like to make art and use my hands and read from paper. Alcohol took my twenties, my phone my thirties, now it’s time to stop.
